Welcome & Visitor Information

"Over the years, I have visited many castles, some privately owned and some run by English Heritage or National Trust but rarely have I found one where the whole experience was as enjoyable as it was at Bolton"

(Vicky Millson. Referring to recent visit to Castle Bolton.)

Bolton Castle is a spectacular mediaeval fortress, preserved in outstanding condition and situated in the heart of Wensleydale, inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Completed in 1399, its scars bear testament to over 600 years of history, including being besieged during the Civil War in 1645 and Mary, Queen of Scots’ imprisonment in 1569. The castle was built by Sir Richard Le Scrope, Lord Chancellor of England and 1st Lord Scrope of Bolton. It has never been sold and remains in the private ownership of Lord Bolton, Sir Richard le Scrope’s direct descendant.

The Castle is open to visitors from the beginning of March until the end of October and is available for private hire throughout the year. We have Civil Wedding, Drinks and Entertainment licenses.

Bolton is an ideal location for both film and photographic shoots and there are also filming opportunities on the rest of the estate.

We cater for school groups, offering anything from a guided tour to a full medieval education day, including costumes, a banquet and a range of activities.
